…just changed. A lot.
I’m 23 years old, live on Long Island, and work in Manhattan for a Media Agency. (It’s part of the advertising industry). I grew up here, went to college at Virginia Tech (GO HOKIES!), and fell in love with the south. I somehow ended up back up north after college, and have been enjoying living rent-free for about 2 years now.
When I was in school I REALLY enjoyed myself. I drank way too much, never worried at all about what I was eating, and visited the gym maybe once or twice a month. My senior year I got a job downtown at a bar/restaurant, and ate all of my meals off of the various menus from the surrounding restaurants, and if possible, drank even more. And I loved it. For a while.
Moving back up to NY, I decided it was time to change my life. I was a competitive swimmer growing up, and was on every diet possible at some point in my life before college, so I had a vast knowledge of “healthy” eating. I was very realistic about my goals, ate the right foods, and started going to the gym everyday. I lost the first 10 pounds in the first month before I got a job. I lost 30 pounds the first year, and another 5 very slowly over the last year. I ran my first half-marathon in April, and I looked forward to running my next this fall, and hopefully a marathon by the fall of 2010 ( a goal I made when I was 15 – to run the NYC Marathon in 2010 when I’m 25). I also bought a bike and started going for 12 mile bike rides once or twice a week down to the beach and back. I took my first yoga class a few weeks ago, and loved it. Also had my first surfing lesson (from my sister) a few weeks ago, and I loved that, too. I’m a very active person and I hate being sedentary.
Then everything changed. I was in a car accident this week and broke my leg. I’m going to be in a cast for the next 8 to 12 weeks, and then will need physical therapy after that before I can think about running, biking, or anything else active. I have no idea how I’m going to handle this, but I’m sure it will be interesting.
I’ve been reading a lot of Healthy Living/Food blogs over the past few months, and have been interested in starting my own for a while. I had planned to use this blog to log my daily eating and activity, but now I think it is going to be so much more than that. I’ll be sharing my journey of a motion-addict forced to sit still. I don’t know how yet, but I will be getting off of this couch. Hopefully sooner than you think.

I’m so sorry to hear about the accident! I hope you recover ASAP!! I know that feeling of being injured and having to sit still – I’m no good at it either. You’ll be in my thoughts and prayers!
